True freshman quarterback LaNorris Sellers had a breakout game for the Gamecocks, throwing for 312 yards and three touchdowns. Sellers connected with Josh Vann for two of those scores, completing passes of 75 and 32 yards, respectively.
After trailing 24-20 heading into the fourth quarter, South Carolina took over the momentum of the game. Sellers led a 12-play, 75-yard drive that culminated in a game-tying field goal by Mitch Jeter.
With just over two minutes remaining, Sellers marched the Gamecocks down the field once again. Facing a 3rd-and-8, Sellers scrambled for 15 yards and a first down. Three plays later, Sellers found Dakereon Joyner in the end zone for the game-winning touchdown.
South Carolina’s defense held Clemson star quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei in check for most of the game, limiting him to just 154 passing yards. The Gamecocks also forced a crucial fourth-quarter fumble by Uiagalelei that set up their game-winning drive.
The win has major implications for both teams’ seasons. South Carolina (6-5) became bowl-eligible with the victory, while Clemson (10-2) saw its College Football Playoff hopes take a significant hit.
South Carolina will close out its regular season next week against rival Georgia. A win in that game could give the Gamecocks an opportunity to qualify for a higher-tier bowl game. Clemson, meanwhile, will look to rebound against North Carolina next week and remain in contention for a New Year’s Six bowl appearance.
