Despite a strong performance from quarterback Evan Prater, who threw for 305 yards and two touchdowns, the Bearcats’ defense struggled to contain the Wildcats’ offense, led by running back Deuce Vaughn.
“It was a tough loss,” said Bearcats head coach Scott Satterfield after the game. “We made some mistakes that cost us, but I’m proud of the way our team fought tonight.”
The game was close throughout, with the Bearcats trailing by only three points with four minutes remaining. However, a late interception by Kansas State sealed the victory for the Wildcats.
“We needed to make a play there, and we didn’t,” said Prater. “But we’ll learn from this and come back stronger next week.”
The loss drops the Bearcats to 2-1 on the season, while Kansas State improves to 3-0. Cincinnati will host Miami (OH) next Saturday at Nippert Stadium.
The Bearcats entered Saturday’s game ranked No. 17 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, while Kansas State was unranked. Cincinnati was the defending American Athletic Conference champion, while Kansas State was the 2022 Big 12 champion.
The game was the first meeting between the two schools since 2018, when Cincinnati won 45-20.
The loss has drawn mixed reactions from Bearcats fans. Some have expressed disappointment, while others have praised the team for its effort.
“I’m disappointed with the loss, but I’m not giving up on this team,” said one fan on social media. “They have a lot of talent, and I believe they can still have a successful season.”
Another fan added: “This loss is a setback, but it’s not the end. The Bearcats have a lot of football left to play, and I’m confident they can bounce back.”
The Bearcats will have a bye week before hosting Miami (OH) on September 23rd. Kansas State will travel to Oklahoma on September 23rd.
