Eddie George Emerges as Head Coaching Candidate for the Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears have added another name to their extensive head coach search, interviewing former Tennessee State coach and Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George on Sunday. The 51-year-old George brings a wealth of experience to the table, both as a player and a coach.
George’s playing career was marked by exceptional achievements. After winning the Heisman Trophy in 1995, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011. As a professional, George played eight seasons for the Tennessee Titans, setting several franchise records and earning All-Pro honors in 2000.
George’s Coaching Tenure at Tennessee State
George began his coaching career at Tennessee State in 2021, leading the Tigers to a tie for first place in the OVC-Big South Football Association and a postseason berth in his second season. He was also named the Big South-OVC Coach of the Year.
George Joins Extensive Bears Coaching Search
George joins a long list of candidates who have interviewed for the Bears’ head coaching position, including interim coach Thomas Brown, Joe Brady, Pete Carroll, Brian Flores, Aaron Glenn, Ben Johnson, Mike Kafka, Mike McCarthy, Todd Monken, Drew Petzing, Ron Rivera, David Shaw, Arthur Smith, Adam Stenavich, Mike Vrabel, and Anthony Weaver.
George Brings Diverse Background to Bears Interview
George’s playing and coaching experience, combined with his participation in the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship with the Bears during the 2023 offseason, make him a strong candidate for the position. The Bears are seeking a leader who can turn around their fortunes after a disappointing 3-14 season in 2022.
Bears Look to Make a Decision Soon
The Bears are expected to make a decision on their new head coach soon. George’s interview is a sign that the team is considering a wide range of candidates and is committed to finding the best fit to lead the team into the future.
