Penguins Acquire Faded Prospect Tomasino from NSH
In a surprising move, the Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired forward Egor Tomasino from the Nashville Predators in exchange for a conditional 2024 fourth-round pick.
Tomasino’s Struggles in Nashville
Tomasino, the former 24th overall pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, has struggled to live up to expectations in Nashville. In 117 NHL games, he has recorded just 24 points (12 goals, 12 assists) while averaging a disappointing 12:03 of ice time per game.
Opportunity in Pittsburgh
The Penguins believe they can provide Tomasino with a fresh start. The 21-year-old will join a young, talented team in need of depth at forward. Pittsburgh is expected to give Tomasino more ice time and offensive responsibility than he received in Nashville.
Conditional Pick
The fourth-round pick acquired by Nashville will only become a third-round pick if Tomasino plays in at least 20 games for the Penguins this season.
Expert Analysis
“Tomasino is a player with undeniable talent,” said ESPN’s Craig Button. “But he needs to be put in a position to succeed. Pittsburgh could be the perfect place for him to get his career back on track.”
Outlook
The Penguins are hoping that Tomasino can rediscover the form that made him a highly touted prospect. If he does, he could provide Pittsburgh with a much-needed boost on the wing. However, if Tomasino continues to struggle, the Penguins may have to consider moving on from him before his contract expires at the end of next season.
