“After careful consideration, we’ve decided to make a change at the quarterback position,” Fisher stated. “We believe that Marcel gives us the best chance to succeed at this point in the season.”
Reed, a highly touted recruit from Austin, Texas, has seen limited playing time this season, mostly in mop-up duty. However, Fisher highlighted his athleticism and strong arm as key factors in his decision.
Weigman, a five-star recruit and the top-ranked quarterback in the 2022 class, started the first four games of the season for the Aggies. While he displayed flashes of talent, he has also struggled with turnovers, completing just 58.1% of his passes with six interceptions.
“I’m disappointed, but I understand the coach’s decision,” Weigman said. “I’ll continue to work hard and be ready when my number is called again.”
The decision to bench Weigman comes amidst growing frustration among fans and media alike over the Aggies’ 2-2 start to the season. The offense has particularly underperformed, averaging just 20.5 points per game.
“This is a pivotal moment for our team,” offensive coordinator Darrell Dickey commented. “We need to find a spark, and we believe that Marcel can provide that.”
The Aggies will face a tough test in Reed’s first start, as they travel to Columbia to face a South Carolina defense that ranks among the top 15 in the nation.
“I’m excited for the opportunity,” Reed said. “I’m ready to lead this team and help us get back on track.”
The outcome of the game and Reed’s performance will undoubtedly have a significant impact on Fisher’s job security and the Aggies’ future prospects.
