Wisconsin Dnr Gives Outlook For Upcoming Gun Deer Season

Wisconsin Dnr Gives Outlook For Upcoming Gun Deer Season

“We’re expecting a very good season this year,” said DNR Deer Program Leader Kevin Wallenfang. “The deer population has grown slightly from last year, and we have seen a strong fawn crop in 2023.”

According to the DNR, the statewide deer population is estimated to be around 1.7 million animals, slightly higher than the 1.6 million deer estimated in 2022. The DNR attributes the increase to favorable weather conditions and reduced hunting pressure during the pandemic.

The agency is predicting favorable hunting conditions for most regions of the state. “We have a good mix of mature bucks and younger deer in the population,” said Wallenfang. “Hunters should be able to find success with a variety of hunting methods.”

However, the DNR cautions that some areas of the state may experience lower deer densities due to habitat changes and increased predator pressure. “Hunters in these areas may need to adjust their expectations and be prepared to put in more time in the field,” said Wallenfang.

Despite the overall positive outlook, the DNR emphasizes that deer hunting is a unique and unpredictable experience. “Every season is different,” said Wallenfang. “Hunters should be prepared for a variety of conditions and adjust their plans accordingly.”

The gun deer season in Wisconsin runs from November 18th to November 27th. The DNR encourages hunters to plan ahead, follow safety regulations, and respect the resource. “We want everyone to have a safe and successful deer hunting experience,” said Wallenfang.

The DNR outlook has been welcomed by hunters and conservation groups alike. “We’re excited about the prospects for the upcoming season,” said Jim Christenson, president of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress. “The DNR has done a great job in managing our deer population, and we’re looking forward to another successful year.”
